Subaru Forester: Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system (if equipped) / Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system ON/OFF setting

While the select lever is shifted to the “R” position, the below functions of the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system can be set by operating the audio/navigation monitor.

ON setting key of Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system
OFF setting key of Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system
ON setting key of the object detection warning beeping sound
OFF setting key of the object detection warning beeping sound

When the ON setting key is shown, the corresponding setting is ON.

Touch and hold the ON setting key to turn the setting OFF.

When the OFF setting is shown, the corresponding setting is OFF.

Touch and hold the OFF setting key to turn the setting ON.

When the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system is turned OFF, the following indicator will illuminate.

RAB OFF indicator: illuminates when the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system is turned OFF.

RAB OFF indicator will turn off when the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system is turned ON.

When the settings cannot be changed, the ON/OFF setting key will be grayed out.
The ON/OFF setting key may be grayed out if the Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system malfunctions, etc. In this case, turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position and then turn it to the “ON” position again. If the setting cannot be changed even after turning the ignition switch to the “ON” position again, consult your SUBARU dealer.
The settings will be restored as follows when the select lever is shifted to the “R” position next time.
- Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system settings: default (ON setting)
- Object detection warning beeping sound: the setting selected by operating the combination meter display (color LCD)
Also, the following settings can be changed by operating the combination meter display (color LCD).

Why Does My Subaru Say “2 Hours From Ignition On”?

Subaru Company tries hard and makes cars that are both technological and comfortable. They are very safe thanks to great safety features (both active and passive ones). But in some cars, you will find even more advanced safety technologies with reminders. People who are new to Subaru cars will be disappointed to see kind of an error on their dashboard. It appears like a pop-up advert on the internet and says: “2 Hours From Ignition On”. And then it just disappears leaving no chance to read it once again.

What’s the problem? Why does it appear? And what should the driver do in this situation? Today we’ll try to reveal why you may see this kind of reminder on your Subaru dashboard.

In short, this «2 Hours from Ignition On» message is not the error. It tells you that the car has been on for 2 hours and you may need some rest. This is just a take-a-break reminder and it’s set in default settings for 2 hours by Subaru. Of course, you can turn ot on or off in the settings of the vehicle and also you can change the interval of this message popping up.

The “2 Hours From Ignition On” Tip – what is it all about?

If you are worried that you got kind of an error, you should calm down. Nothing bad happens with your car, it’s completely OK. The reason why you see this message popping up from time to time is just that the car reminds you that you need to have some rest. These kinds of reminders are really popular in Australia where they were included in nearly all cars at certain times. And, as you may know, Subaru sells really well in Australia. That’s why this feature is sometimes presented in American cars. Actually, many cars in the US now have this feature — like some Toyotas will show you a coffee cup warning light and Kia cars will say «Time to Take a Break» or something like this.

So, the message basically tells you such things:
- it’s been 2 hours since you turned on the ignition in your car;
- it’s time to have some rest and drive more carefully as you may be tired;
- you need to check whether you want to have a stop and walk outside for a while;
- you need to note that driving for more than 2 hours without a stop can be harmful.
In Subaru, they think that every two hours a driver should have some rest. And this is a really good idea. After you have spent over 2 hours behind your steering wheel, you feel tired, your concentration starts dropping step by step. And you may not even notice this, but one moment you will need to hit the brakes and you won’t do this because of lack of concentration. So better park your car and breathe some fresh air for a minute or two.

Does the message say about any issues in a car?

No, you may be sure that this message is not an error. It doesn’t try to warn you that you have some issue with the car. It just tries to make you have some rest. Subaru is programming those reminders to 2 hours intervals because the company has studied some stats and found out that only a small fraction of those bad car accidents happen with the drivers who were driving for less than 2 hours. This brings to the conclusion that having rest after 2 hours of driving is a very nice idea that can save your life.

What other reminders you may have in your Subaru?

Subaru cars are quite good at reminding you about anything. They are smart and can be programmed if you aren’t glad about the manufacturer’s settings. Here are the types of reminders you can use in your Subaru vehicle:
1. Service reminder. You can program by yourself the mileage for the next regular maintenance. Also, the reminder will tell you to visit the service station if the mileage is still low, but the time frame has been achieved.
2. Rest reminder. This is actually the type of reminder we were talking about in the first part of our article. You may just try to listen to this reminder and stop whenever it says you. In this way, you will increase the chance of safe driving.
3. Seatbelt reminder. A lot of Subaru cars won’t move unless you are buckled up. If your seat belt isn’t fastened, the car may give you a kind of reminder that will be very annoying, so you will eventually fasten the belt and increase the safety on the road.
4. Birthday, anniversary reminders, etc. The latest models have quite a useful feature to remind you about someone’s birthday or about your anniversary. By setting these reminders, you won’t forget about the important day and will have some time to buy a present or book a table in a restaurant.
Also, modern Subarus will tell you about low tire pressure, low oil level, problems with coolant temperature, and also about all other features that can damage your car. Keep an eye on any messages popping up on the dashboard of your Subaru car and make it safer to drive.

What to do if you don’t want to see the rest reminder?

You certainly can change the time period for this reminder to come up and you will also be able to turn it off if the “2 Hours from Ignition On” message bothers you. We don’t recommend getting rid of this feature.

Now you know what it means and it will not bother you as much as before. Also, you will be able to set the needed period for this warning to appear. Maybe, you want to set 3 hours and then your Subaru will helpfully tell you that you need to take a break.

Here’s how you can change it:
- Park your car so that you can access settings easily.
- Go to settings using your infotainment or buttons on your steering wheel.
- Find “General” tab in the settings and see what you have there.
- The needed settings may have several names, so you will need to deduct it on your own.
- Once you are in the menu, you have two options – to change the period of the notification popping up or to turn the feature off.
- After you choose the needed option, just leave the settings and continue driving.
Although you may not need this reminder, we strongly recommend keeping it. This is a great feature that you can use to plan your trip and to drive safely. Unfortunately, the driver will not feel drowsiness when it comes, but we all have this limit when we don’t pay enough attention to the road anymore.

Having a break every two or three hours when you are driving on highways is a really great idea that can sometimes even save your life!

What if your Subaru shows this message too often?

In case you see the «2 Hours From Ignition On» notification much earlier than after 2 hours of driving, you should know that there is a slight chance of a malfunction. We can only think of two general problems that can trigger this message while it actually shouldn’t be there:
- The low battery and/or bad alternator. When the system doesn’t get proper voltage, it may glitch. And one of the symptoms of such glitches is random error message on the dash. For example, the ECU may think that you’ve been already driving two hours and need some rest.
- The glitch in the ECU. If the ECU was in contact with water or extreme heat, there is a chance that it’s not completely OK. It may have gone mad and is about to burn completely. But before it burns, it will send you some messages on the dash to get on your nerves.
Actually, these situations are very rare, that’s why we are only telling you about them in the final part of the article. But still, they are worth knowing. Also, checking the battery and the alternator will not be a bad idea for any Subaru owner.

Why is it important to take some breaks when driving?

In Europe and in the UK they have the regulations that a driver can’t drive continuously for more than 4 and a half hours straight. Here’s the link to the law if you want to check that.

In America the rules are different. Drivers can be up to 14 hours on duty and then 10 hours off duty. Within those 14 hours, they are allowed to have 11 hours of driving time (10 hours for passenger transport). This is all about professional drivers, not about you and me.

But those limitations tell us one precious thing: you have to limit the time you are driving your car without a stop. These laws are written by the blood of those people who died in car accidents caused by fatigue. If you feel sleepy or if you want to just walk around and breathe some fresh air, just stop and spend five minutes outside your car. This will help you recharge your batteries and get ready for another 2 hours of driving.

The best way to travel long distances is to have two drivers and change every 2 hours. But if you are the only driver in the car, you will just need to take breaks. Please consider those reports and make sure your driving is safe enough.

How many car crashes happen because of fatigue?

We decided to investigate more and we’ve found out that over 20% of car accidents happen because of fatigue. This is huge! Virginia Tech Transportation reveals in one of their recent studies that drivers’ fatigue causes more deaths on the road than many other factors like drunk driving or technical failures. The study says that young drivers are particularly vulnerable to driving when fatigued. The scientists say that the drivers were actually falling asleep in all those cases when they were about to crash their cars.

This study shows that good guys work in Subaru and they know for sure that the rest reminder is not the bad thing to have in your car. We hope that after learning about the investigation and the results you won’t feel like turning this feature off in your Subaru.

Verdict: Subaru saving lives

Well, Subaru is actually the only car manufacturer that offers this kind of a reminder in American cars. In Australia, you will find many more cars with such a feature. And we don’t recommend turning the feature off or modifying it in any way. The 2-hour driving session can be quite exhausting, so you better consider those reminders and have a little rest at the nearest petrol station or just outside your car. After 5 minutes of rest, you’ll be ready to drive for another 2 hours with much better safety and lower risks of falling asleep and getting into a car crash.

Постоянный и симметричный: особенности полного привода Subaru

Сначала о симметричности. Первое, на что обращают внимание оппоненты, — это «несимметричный межосевой дифференциал», используемый в одной из схем трансмиссий Subaru. Как же так? Нет симметрии, нет гармонии… На самом деле, говоря о симметрии, инженеры Subaru имеют в виду исключительно симметричность геометрическую. И действительно: горизонтально-оппозитный двигатель Subaru Boxer расположен продольно, длина левой и правой полуосей одинакова… Далее «по списку». Полная симметрия. Если же говорить о трансмиссии с механической коробкой передач, то здесь вообще абсолютно симметричная конструкция полного привода. В связи с этим стоит добавить, что оригинальные компоновочные решения Subaru позволили обеспечить и удачную развесовку автомобилей по осям, и эффективную реализацию характеристик двигателя, и баланс сцепления колес.

Конструкция шасси Subaru WRX STI решена в спортивном ключе.

Теперь о постоянстве того самого полного привода. Как было сказано выше, в арсенале Subaru несколько типов трансмиссий, но самой массовой является автоматическая c бесступенчатой АКП и многодисковой муфтой MP-T (Multi Plate Transfer), управляемой посредством электроники и гидравлики. Такой вариант трансмиссии носит в Subaru название Active Torque Split, то есть «активное распределение крутящего момента». Давление, с которым сжимаются диски муфты, дозируется блоком управления трансмиссией и меняется в зависимости от условий движения. Важно, что ни при каких условиях диски муфты не распускаются полностью: минимум 20 % давления на диски всегда присутствует. И если принять во внимание, что гидравлическое давление в субаровских автоматических трансмиссиях составляет от 30 до 60 атмосфер (в зависимости от типа АКП), то давление от 3 до 15 атмосфер в любом случае будет воздействовать на диски муфты. Речь здесь идет именно о давлении, а не о процентах передачи крутящего момента. Тяга на переднюю ось через шестерню передается с вала коробки передач, а на заднюю ось — за счет трения дисков в муфте. Работой клапанов муфты посредством широтно-импульсного сигнала управляет блок TCM (Transmission Control Module). Диапазон изменения импульсов — от 20 до 100 %, и в такой же пропорции будет изменяться давление на поршень, сжимающий диски. К слову, это также говорит о постоянстве полного привода: полностью диски муфты не распускаются. И следует помнить, что 100‑процентное давление на диски не означает 100 % момента, передаваемого на колеса: «на-гора» выдается ровно столько, сколько сможет «осилить» муфта. При равномерном движении по ровной дороге муфта MP-T распределяет крутящий момент между передними и задними колесами в соотношении 60:40. Это некий базовый, идеальный алгоритм распределения крутящего момента, где передние колеса имеют чуть больше тяги, меньший радиус качения и вращаются несколько быстрее, нежели задние. При прохождении крутого поворота или в сложных дорожных условиях может происходить существенное перераспределение крутящего момента между осями, но до нуля давление, передаваемое на диски муфты, не падает никогда. Как уже говорилось, трансмиссия с муфтой MP-T и вариатором является наиболее распространенным вариантом и сегодня применяется на таких моделях Subaru, как Forester, Outback и XV.

На любом типе покрытия благодаря Symmetrical AWD автомобили Subaru демонстрируют отменную управляемость.

Следующая система распределения крутящего момента постоянного полного привода Subaru — VTD (Variable Torque Distribution), используемая в настоящее время на модели WRX. Применяемый здесь несимметричный межосевой дифференциал в обычных условиях распределяет крутящий момент между передней и задней осью в соотношении 45:55. В конструкции трансмиссии также используется муфта блокировки дифференциала. Блокировка межосевого дифференциала штука полезная, но в данном случае она, скорее всего, окажется нужной лишь в какой-то экстремальной ситуации. С 2009 года на всех автомобилях Subaru применяется система курсовой устойчивости VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control), которая при необходимости успешно выполняет функции муфты блокировки.

Один из примеров симметрии — модель Tribeca.

Пока еще в гамме автомобилей Subaru остается и исчезающий вид — модели с механическими коробками передач. Этот очень неплохой вариант, к большому сожалению, пользуется все меньшим спросом у покупателей. В связи с этим в японской корпорации принято решение постепенно переходить на версии с автоматами. Что касается трансмиссии с механической КП, то в ее конструкции применен симметричный межосевой дифференциал с коническими шестернями, блокируемый с помощью вискомуфты. В обычных дорожных условиях тяга между передними и задними колесами распределяется в пропорции 50:50, но в случае, к примеру, пробуксовки вискомуфта добавит крутящий момент на «отстающие» колеса. Такая трансмиссия наверняка полюбилась тем, кто практикует спортивный стиль езды, но если говорить о спортивной составляющей истории Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, то это, конечно же, трансмиссия модели WRX STI.

Многодисковая муфта MP-T, управляемая гидравликой.

DCCD. Эта аббревиатура означает Driver Controlled Centre Differential и говорит о том, что водитель может принимать непосредственное участие в управлении межосевым дифференциалом. В конструкции трансмиссии модели WRX STI применен несимметричный цилиндрический дифференциал с распределением крутящего момента между передней и задней осью в соотношении 41:59. В схеме DCCD присутствует своеобразный симбиоз электронной и механической блокировок межосевого дифференциала, оперативно реагирующих на изменение крутящего момента. При движении в автоматическом режиме блок управления DCCD получает сигналы с многочисленных датчиков и, следуя некоему суперсекретному алгоритму, оптимально настраивает трансмиссию под конкретные дорожные условия. Но в настройку трансмиссии может вмешаться и водитель: в салоне есть соответствующий регулятор, позволяющий изменять степень блокировки электромагнитной муфты.

Понятно, что Symmetrical All Wheel Drive — это не самоцель корпорации Subaru, а важный инструмент, позволяющий сделать автомобили этой марки еще более эффективными и безопасными. А для водителей это еще и возможность получить удовольствие от управления.
